A compendium of cool terms from all over the Cyberpunk genre.

Either if you are a green or seasoned runner, there are a lot of words out there in the Cyberpunk genre that may not mean what you think.

Before saying the wrong thing to the wrong merc and getting yourself flatlined, have this list at hand.

As there are a huge amount of terms available to compile, we will just put some of the most commonly used or more relevant, but the list will be updated as needed.

Also, not all of these terms will be used in the context of the 2112 universe, but knowledge does not take up any space, unless you are running dry on your memchips…

\\ 2112: Term introduced by our project (as far as we are aware) or with a specific use in the context of our project.

\\ IRL: Term used in the real, current world.

\\ CP: Term used in general Cyberpunk literature.

 

 

AI : (IRL) Artificial Intelligence. A computer or network-based entity, originally designed to solve complex problems.

Architect: (2112) A highly skilled professional that designs Grids. It may or may not be the same that programs them.

Arcology: (IRL) A self-contained or self-sufficient habitat or community, usually enclosed within a huge vertical building or a group of them.

Avatar: (IRL) The visual representation of a user inside The Grid.

Backdoor: (IRL) A hole in a systems security, that when properly utilized, grants an unauthorized user easy access.

Big Five, The: (2112) Colloquial term to refer to the five biggest corporations in the 2112 universe.

Black ICE: (CP) Illegal countermeasure software which causes physical harm or death to an intruder (see Ice).

Bouncer ICE: (2112) A subtype of ICE whose main objective is to block the path of the runner, halting its progress.

Console: (2112) A hardware designed to interact with The Grid, usually modified (illegally) by Runners for hacking purposes. (see also «Deck»)

Corpo(CP) Corporate employee. A derisive term for people who are seen as corporate sellouts.

Cryptorunner: (2112) A hacker (also «Runner»).

Cyberpsychosis: (CP) A psychotic aberration suffered by excessive users of cyberware. Not necessarily a defined illness in the 2112 universe.

Cyberware: (CP) Any cybernetic/bionic body implant which replaces or augments a specific body function.

Cyphers, The: (2112) One of the five main factions in the 2112 universe.

Deck: (CP) See «Console» (also «Cyberdeck»).

Enigma: (2112) An encoded message, allegedly received from the planet Syrinx. Part of the initiation rite of The Cyphers.

Faction: (2112) Each of the five main groups a Cryptorunner can belong to.

Fixer: (CP) Dealmaker. This is a real-world term, and the Cyberpunk slang carries its criminal connotation.

Flatline: (CP) Die or kill.

Grid, The: (2112) The cyberspace. Worlds designed by specialists (see «Architects») to represent virtual places a user can navigate through their Avatar when Jacked-In.

Guild, The: (2112) One of the five main factions in the 2112 universe.

ICE: (CP) Security software, Intrusion Countermeasures Electronics.

Icebreaker: (CP) Any program or software designed to penetrate or foil ice.

Jack-In: (CP) To connect or interface with the virtual world.

Makers, The: (2112) One of the five main factions in the 2112 universe.

Meatspace: (CP) The world outside The Grid.

Punks, The: (2112) One of the five main factions in the 2112 universe.

Ripperdoc: (CP) A surgeon who specializes in implanting illegal or unregistered cyberware.

Ronin: (2112) A Stray Dog that usually works solo. (Also «Stray Ronin»).

Run: (2112) A hacking incursion. The classic cyberpunk term is «Netrun».

Sentinel ICE: (2112) A subtype of ICE whose main objective is to attack the Runner. Black ICEs are usually of this subtype.

Stray Dogs, The: (2112) One of the five main factions in the 2112 universe.

Syrinx: (2112) Planet from where The Cyphers allegedly receive the messages known as «Enigmas».

Trace: (2112) Action of pinpointing the location of a Runner either inside The Grid or in Meatspace.

Watcher ICE: (2112) A subtype of ICE whose main objective is to collect information about the Runner.
